Robotics World Championships in Houston

The competition hosted over 600 teams worldwide and was divided into 8 divisions, of which our Blazing Bulldogs were placed into the Johnson Division. After a tough schedule of qualification matches, we were ranked 23 out of 75, then picked first of the second alliance, arguably making us the 3rd/4th best team in the division! Our alliance was comprised of Team 1619 Up-A-Creek Robotics from Colorado (our captain), Team 316 LUNATECS from New Jersey, Team 5449 from China (our back-up robot), and us! During eliminations, we started strong with a nail-biter 2 point win of 243-241, then experienced a heart-breaking lost with one of our alliance members tipping over, making it difficult to win 2v3 during our second elimination match. In our third elimination match, our competition journey sadly came to a close with a hard-fought defeat of 228-254.

Though our Bulldogs didn't win it all, we had a blast spending time with each other and meeting teams from all over the world. Through our experiences, we improved immensely from last year, which can be highlighted by our accomplishments at Champs:

  • Achieved the Auto Ranking Point in all matches
  • Held the Division High Score of 260 (unpenalized) for most of the Qualification Round
  • Increased EPA (metric for a team's performance) steadily since our first competition
  • Worked with each other very well amongst our subteams, bringing our largest team taken to Champs
  • Awarded the Creativity Award, the first time winning an award at Champs in the team's history
  • Selected great teams for the Elimination Tournament despite our struggles
  • Interviewed by the FUN Robotics Network; video highlights here! (w/ Emi Kanemoto, Elias Kaskowitz, and Simon Parker)

Zuma [the robot] is taking a much-needed break and our kids are back in the lab, recruiting new members for the upcoming school year, and preparing for the Summer Offseason!  Thank you again for all of your support, especially those who showed up at competitions, watched our streams, participated in our fundraisers, or simply shared words of encouragement.
