Naviance Career Search

Naviance is a web-based college and career exploration tool available to students. Students will register during their 9th grade year and be able to start exploring their options after high school. Naviance provides a variety of resources, including:

Career and Personality Interest Inventories (Myers-Briggs and Strong) to help you discover potential careers and majors that match your skills and interests
Career Exploration – job descriptions and summaries, and tools to show you the education, skills, and abilities necessary for thousands of careers, as well as expected salaries.
Resume Builder - students can start keeping track of their activities in one place.

Paying for College

College can cost less than you think!

Financing a college education is a partnership between colleges, the government, parents, and students. The cost of attending college can often be offset or paid entirely with financial aid packages. Financial aid consists of gifts that you do not have to repay (grants and scholarships) and self-help aid (loans and employment programs).

Financial aid helps students and their families pay for college. It can cover a range of educational expenses, like tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies, and transportation. There are different types of financial aid that can help offset the cost of college.

Different types of financial aid

Grants - Financial aid from the state that does not have to be repaid
Scholarships - Free money students can receive from different organizations by filling out applications
Loans - Borrowed money from the school or private institutions with varying interest rates that needs to be repaid
Work Study - work program through which you earn money while going to school in order to help you pay

Resources

Cal Grants - Are awards that the recipient does not repay. To receive a Cal Grant, submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and a verified Grade Point Average with the California Student Aid Commission by no later than March 2nd. Cal Grant GPA Opt-Out.pdf
California Dream Act – The CA Dream Act Application is used to determine the California state financial eligibility of students who meet the qualifications of Assembly Bill 540 (AB 540), AB 130, and AB 131. The California State Aid Commission (CSAC) will process this application. Any aid received can only be used as eligible California institutions. The CA Dream Act Application is used to apply for state financial aid like the University of California Grants, State University Grants and Community College Board of Governor’s fee waivers. FAFSA - The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the federal application for financial aid. It may also be used to apply for aid from other sources, such as your state or school. The deadlines for your state or schools may be different from the federal deadlines and you may be required to complete additional forms. Filling out and submitting the FAFSA is ALWAYS FREE of charge. FAFSA Presentation: English Spanish
Federal Student ID - Federal Student ID - An FSA ID gives you access to Federal Student Aid’s online systems and can serve as your legal signature. You (both parents & student) will need this to sign off on your FAFSA. Only create an FSA ID using your own personal information and for your own exclusive use. You are not authorized to create an FSA ID on behalf of someone else, including a family member. Misrepresentation of your identity to the federal government could result in criminal or civil penalties.
FinAid - This site provides detailed information about scholarships, loans, savings plans, financial aid applications, and more.
Fastweb - This site presents information about over 1 million scholarships, in addition to internships and part-time employment near your home or school.
GoingMerry - This site presents information with over thousands of scholarships. Scholarship applications are directly incorporated into GoingMerry without requiring students to click on external links.
CSS/Profile - By filling out one form, you can apply online for non federal financial aid from almost 400 colleges, universities, professional schools, and scholarship programs.

This website covers college admissions requirements for California public colleges and tells you about the different systems of higher education in California and provides online tools to match students with a college or career that suits their needs.

College Exams

UC and CSUs are not currently requiring SAT or ACT scores as a part of the admissions process.

If you are planning to apply to any public universities outside of California or private universities that are requiring score submission for admissions, students are responsible for submitting those scores and the required documentation.

If you are scheduling to take the SAT or ACT, use the CollegeBoard School Code – 053098 for San José High. If you require an SAT/ACT fee waiver and qualify for Free and Reduced Lunch, please speak with your counselor. San José Unified covers the fees for Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate exams. Additionally, we offer a limited number of PSAT exams to 11th grade students competing for the National Merit Scholarship.
