Graduation Requirements

San José Unified graduation requirements align to the A-G requirements of the California State University (CSU) schools and the University of California (UC) schools. Students are required to earn a minimum of 220 credits for graduation. An alternative graduation path may be available through a school counselor for students unable to meet the standard graduation path requirements.

Students are also required to complete 10 hours of community service for each year of enrollment in a San José Unified high school (maximum of 40 hours).

Community Service Requirements

The community service requirement has been waived by the state of California and the San José Unified Board of Education as follows:

  • Class of 2024: Required 10 hours (All hours must be submitted to attend Prom 4/19/2024)
  • Class of 2025: Required 20 hours
  • Class of 2026: Required 30 hours
  • Class of 2027: Required 40 hours

Community Service Guidelines

  • All community service will be completed outside of school hours.
  • Service hours completed during the school year at Science Camps will be limited to a total of 20 hours. This includes service completed during recesses.
  • Service hours will not be granted for club meetings.
  • Paid work will not be considered for community service hours.
  • Service credit will not be granted for recruitment, membership building, or teaching about an organization or its beliefs, philosophy or mission. For example, Community Service credit will be granted for volunteer work performed at a church providing childcare, directing recreational activities, helping to feed or clothe those in need, and providing other community services, but credit will not be granted for teaching about religious beliefs or for organizing or participating in religious ceremonies. 

Credit Recovery

Credit recovery is offered through Edgenuity and SJHS Extended School Year (ESY)

Edgenuity is an online credit recovery program where students are able to work at their own pace. Students can re-take courses for credit recovery or to improve their grade to meet the UC/CSU "A-G" requirements. To enroll in Edgenuity courses or discuss college eligibility, please contact your counselor.

Extended School Year (ESY)
Information for the 2024 Summer Session will be provided before May 2024.
Students who are in need of credit recovery for 2023-24 school year will be recommended by counselors to enroll in ESY for 2024. Contact your counselor to discuss what courses you may be interested in for credit recovery.
